Spaces That Build Skilled Careers

Revolution Workshop and Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC) show how specialized training spaces can help residents move toward employment and financial stability. At its East Garfield Park facility – a renovated warehouse – Revolution Workshop connects construction and woodworking training with career development, financial capability instruction, and support that helps participants overcome barriers. At the new Aspire Center in Austin, JARC provides hands-on instruction in welding, computer numerical control, and mechanical assembly, along with financial counseling and career coaching. Both organizations demonstrate that workforce facilities can be places where residents gain practical skills, receive consistent support, and prepare for wealth-building careers.

Spaces Designed for Learning and Early Education

The Carole Robertson Center for Learning and Loyola University Chicago are creating spaces that reflect the people they serve, from young children and their families to college students preparing for careers. At the Carole Robertson Center, that commitment extends to the early childhood workforce. Its TransformED apprenticeship model recruits, trains and supports educators while creating stronger pathways to credentials, advancement and more stable employment. By investing in employees as well as children, the Center strengthens the entire learning community. In May, Loyola broke ground on a new nursing and science facility in Rogers Park that will include specialized classrooms, research spaces, and advanced simulation environments that reflect the evolving demands of health care education. Gathering, study, and collaboration spaces will also help create a more connected student experience. Similarly, the newly renovated Carole Robertson Center for Learning in Little Village demonstrates how thoughtfully designed early childhood spaces can support learning, family development, and children’s long-term growth. The $12 million renovation added a library, kitchen, music room, classrooms, and gymnasium while creating a brighter, more research-driven environment for the roughly 300 children, youth, and families the center serves. Whether supporting a child’s first learning experiences, advancing careers in education, or helping students pursue their professional goals, thoughtfully designed spaces can foster belonging, access, and long-term growth for both learners and the people who care for and guide them.

Spaces Where Financial Futures Take Shape

Brighton Park Neighborhood Council (BPNC) and LIFT-Chicago create accessible places for residents to strengthen their financial knowledge, pursue employment, and make progress toward long-term economic mobility. Brighton Park Neighborhood Council is expanding its financial services at its newly opened community service center while connecting residents with workforce development through its partnership with PODER, which opened its headquarters in a repurposed, long-vacant building in Gage Park in 2023. BPNC offers financial literacy, planning, foreclosure prevention, homebuyer counseling, and pathways to training and employment. This approach allows residents to address immediate needs while building toward greater stability and asset ownership. LIFT Chicago takes a two-generation approach, partnering with parents through individualized coaching focused on education, employment and financial health. LIFT-Chicago opened its South Side headquarters in the redeveloped Rosenwald Courts in Bronzeville to bring its services closer to the families it partners with across the South Side.
