How Restricted Funds Can Support Chicago’s Creative Community

For many donors, a love of the arts is deeply personal, shaped by formative experiences in classrooms, concert halls, neighborhood theaters, and community centers. That passion often inspires a lasting question: What will my support for the arts make possible for artists, students, and audiences not just today, but for generations to come? For more than 100 years, donors have partnered with The Chicago Community Trust to turn their commitment to arts and culture into enduring community impact, ensuring that Chicago’s creative institutions continue to thrive long into the future.

Donors support the arts in many ways. Some make direct gifts to nonprofit organizations. Others partner with the Trust to establish donor advised funds to recommend grants over time, create field of interest funds focused on issue areas such as arts and culture, education, or health care, or make unrestricted gifts to the Trust’s endowment to address evolving community priorities. Others create restricted funds, also called designated funds, that are endowed for a specific purpose, or to a specific organization. Designated funds are a particularly powerful way to sustain arts organizations and provide reliable, long‑term support while strengthening stability across Chicago’s nonprofit arts ecosystem.

Restricted funds allow donors to direct ongoing support to the issues and institutions they believe in and care about most. These gifts are invested as part of the Trust’s endowment, generating funding that the Trust can grant each year in a way that honors the donor’s wishes. For arts organizations, these grants can provide a stable source of funding allowing for long‑term planning, staff retention, programming, and resilience in times of uncertainty.

In April 2025, the Trust awarded $328,000 in restricted funding to three arts organizations: Chicago Sinfonietta, FAME Center, and People’s Music School. Together, these grants demonstrate how donor-designated purpose, paired with the Trust’s long‑term stewardship, translates into meaningful opportunity and sustained cultural vitality.

People’s Music School received $150,000 over three years to support its mission of providing high‑quality, tuition‑free music education to young people across Chicago, with a focus on students from under-resourced communities. Through intensive instruction, mentorship, and performance opportunities, students develop musical excellence alongside confidence, discipline, and social‑emotional skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Sustained participation in music education programs like these has been shown to improve academic outcomes, particularly for students facing the greatest barriers to opportunity.

A $100,000 grant to Chicago Sinfonietta is supporting culturally relevant music education for elementary and high school students in underserved Chicago Public Schools, as well as youth engagement at live performances. The organization’s programming—from free in‑school instruction and biweekly mentoring to family access to concerts—builds lifelong connections to music while ensuring that classical performance reflects and reaches all of Chicago’s communities.

FAME Center received $78,000 to support its Duke Ellington Scholarship Fund, which removes financial barriers to private music instruction for students from Chicago’s South and West Side neighborhoods. Over three years, the fund will provide 39 students with weekly private lessons, performance opportunities, and mentorship, supporting artistic growth at a formative moment in their lives.

For more than a century, the Trust has stood alongside Chicago’s arts and culture community and donors interested in expanding access to arts and culture.
