Protecting the Rights & Dignity of All: National Immigrant Justice Center

Founded in 1984, the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) believes that immigrants’ rights are human rights, and that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and to live without fear of persecution or family separation. The organization works to ensure all immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in and around Chicago have access to legal counsel and a fair day in court. By combining direct legal services with strategic advocacy and litigation, NIJC works to transform the immigration system, thus protecting the rights and dignity of all.

Each year, NIJC reaches more than 10,000 individuals through legal services. In 2025, it secured the release of dozens of individuals who were unlawfully detained, launched a rapid-response team to provide updated Know Your Rights trainings, and created a habeas project to challenge unlawful arrests. NIJC also trains pro bono lawyers and advocates across the Midwest and cultivates partnerships with community organizations to reach those most vulnerable.
