2019 End-of-Year Charitable Giving: Important Dates and Deadlines

We at The Chicago Community Trust are committed to making your year-end giving easy and meaningful. Please review these important deadlines to ensure that all your gifts and grants intended for 2019 are processed and credited in a timely manner.

Important note: The Chicago Community Trust office will be closed from December 23, 2019 through January 1, 2020.

Charitable gifts to the Trust

Friday, December 6, 2019
Closely held stock, mutual funds

Gifts of closely held stock, publicly traded stock held by a broker and mutual funds should be initiated by Friday, December 6, 2019.

Gifts of stock that are transferred via depository trust company (DTC) will be acknowledged the day the stock is credited to The Chicago Community Trust brokerage account. DTC transfers typically take 24 hours to complete, but brokerage firms might be delayed in processing client requests at year-end because of the volume of transfer instructions that come in at this time. Please refer to our gift instructions form for details.

Charitable trusts and gift annuities

When assets will be used to fund a charitable trust or charitable gift annuity, please contact Tim Bresnahan or Don Gottesman no later than Monday, December 9 to determine whether your gift can be completed by year-end.

Monday, December 16, 2019
Cash wire transfers

Please initiate cash wire transfers by Monday, December 16 to ensure receipt of the funds by The Chicago Community Trust by Monday, December 31. Please refer to our gift instructions form for details.

Mailed gifts

Gifts made by check and sent via U.S. Mail must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, December 31.

Gifts by private mailing services

Gifts made by check and sent via private mailing services such as FedEx must be received in our office by the morning of Tuesday, December 31.

Other, more complex assets—such as real estate, restricted stock or other gifted assets—may require approval from our Gift Acceptance Committee, so we request that you initiate these donations as soon as possible. Please contact Tim Bresnahan or Don Gottesman for any assistance you need.

Grants from donor advised funds at the Trust to nonprofit organizations

Grant recommendations complete

Recommendations for grants to organizations must be submitted by Wednesday, December 18 to ensure that checks will be issued by December 31.
