Lugenia Burns Hope Center
The Lugenia Burns Hope Center was founded in the mid 1990?s by Dr. Sokoni Karanja and President Barack Obama as a leadership development and organizing institute for Blacks that reside on the southside of Chicago. The' Hope Center has provided a 10 week course in Basic Principles of Leadership and Organizing for over 300 participants. In the mid 2000's the Hope Center began its Housing Bronzeville project that was focused on providing home ownership opportunities for low income residents in Bronzeville. The Hope Center has passed a community referendum met with the International Olympic Committee during the Chicago Olympic bid started parent engagement initiative that later became its own organization. The Hope Center has secured 50 city owned lots to be set aside for low income home ownership in a community that was gentrifying at at a rapid rate in mid to late 2000
