For more than 100 years, The Chicago Community Trust has convened, supported, funded, and accelerated the work of community members and changemakers committed to strengthening the Chicago region. From building up our civic infrastructure to spearheading our response to the Great Recession, the Trust has brought our community together to face pressing challenges and seize our greatest opportunities. Today, that means confronting the racial and ethnic wealth gap.

Congo Square Theatre Company
Congo Square Theatre Company respectfully requests a $30,000 grant from the Chicago Charitable Trust for the African American Legacy Initiative to support our general operations, including assisting with staff and ensemble salaries and providing content and programming that will engage and expand our audiences through digital platforms. We first initiated digital content during the 2020-2021 COVID season and hope to continue doing so as it exponentially expands audience reach and access beyond our in-person venues. General operations funding will also contribute to building and strengthening our infrastructure and community engagement and educational partnerships. As an organization that focuses on the Black experience in the work we produce and perform, we strive to disrupt systems of racism that permeate communities by providing a space where Black art and artists are celebrated and showcased. We do this through a combination of performances, youth development programming, artist fellowships, digital productions, and events and festivals that celebrate the vibrancy of Black creators. As we look ahead to the future, we seek to establish a permanent theatre on the South Side where there is currently a dearth of professional theatre companies, artistic opportunities, and creative outlets for local residents.

Gray Matter Experience
We are at a significant growth inflection point and require more general operating funds to continue expanding our team to impact more youth both in and outside of Chicago. We have identified that we must offer competitive salaries and compensation packages (including healthcare benefits and incentives), in order to attract job applicants that are equipped to lead and develop our programs in the ways that are needed to keep the organization growing and strong. We are seeking general operating funds to be able to increase the salaries for current staff members and those that will join our team in the future. We aim to create a work environment where we can offer our majority Black and Brown staff members competitive salaries and growth opportunities commiserate with other entrepreneurial development organizations. We believe that doing so will allow us to hire high caliber talent that is able to successfully lead and manage the program strategy for the organization, allowing the founder and operations manager to focus on infrastructure, growth and sustainability for the organization.
