As our region’s community foundation, The Chicago Community Trust unites generous donors, committed nonprofits, and caring residents to effect lasting change that moves our entire region forward.

Why Donate Cryptocurrency to the Trust?

Philanthropy is what we do.

The Chicago Community Trust facilitates and optimizes our donors’ giving to issues they care about and to nonprofit organizations that are making a difference. Unlike financial institutions for whom philanthropy is a line of business, philanthropy is the exclusive focus of the Trust.

Enjoy tax advantages and giving strategies.

The Chicago Community Trust offers a comprehensive range of giving vehicles that you and your advisors can combine for a wide range of tax advantages and sophisticated tools for estate planning — all while increasing your impact on the issues and causes you care about most

Flexibility.

We accept a variety of gifts and will customize a giving plan that fits your charitable goals.

Why Donate Crypto Directly?

It’s a tax-efficient way to make a charitable impact.

When donating appreciated cryptocurrency that you’ve held for more than one year to a public charity like The Chicago Community Trust, you receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the crypto, and eliminate the capital gains tax you would have incurred if you had sold the crypto and then made a donation. That means you’re able to donate more, as well as deduct more on your tax return.

Important Reminders for Gifts of Crypto

The Chicago Community Trust accepts gifts of cryptocurrency through The Giving Block, and we quickly liquidate your gift, putting your generosity to work right away.

Remember, with your cryptocurrency gift of $500 or more, you’ll need to file a Form 8283 with the IRS. With gifts of $5,000 or more, a qualified appraisal is required for submission with your 8283 (The Giving Block can recommend qualified appraisers). Before you file IRS Form 8283, The Chicago Community Trust will need to countersign your form.

Once your gift is liquidated, we’ll also file an 8282. We’ll provide you with a copy of that form.
