Better Boys Foundation

BBF was founded in 1961 by the late Joseph Kellman. Kellman, a native of the North Lawndale community, opened the agency as a boys’ after-school boxing club. By the late 1960s, Kellman recognized that boxing, while positive in its focus on discipline and physical skills development, did little to improve long-term life outcomes for youth individually or as members of the larger North Lawndale community. That recognition has led to the evolution of the agency over the last 52 years from a single-sex sports program into a multifaceted youth development agency that serves both boys and girls and provides innovative out-of-school time programming for elementary and high school students and scholarships and other post-secondary services to support young people in applying to and completing a college degree or vocational training program
