Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC) seeks funding to expand the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance’s youth leadership work through the “Building Resilience: LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health and Leadership Program”. This initiative, led by the Youth Advisory Board (YAB), aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of LGBTQ+ youth to promote positive mental health within their communities. The project has three primary goals: Goal 1: Increase the knowledge and skills around positive mental health among Alliance YAB members. Goal 2: Refine current Alliance’s workshops and develop new youth-led workshops that integrate learned skills to share with LGBTQ+ youth and peers Goal 3: Goal 3: Promote positive mental health with a broader audience through creative ways identified by YAB. Through this program, YAB members will gain leadership skills and a deeper understanding of coping mechanisms and incorporate this knowledge into workshops. This will promote a youth-centered and trauma-informed approach and foster a stronger sense of community and support among LGBTQ+ youth. This project centers LGBTQ+ youth experience and aims to empower YAB members to continue their work in promoting LGBTQ+ liberation, mental well-being, and a brighter future.

The Metropolitan Tenants Organization (MTO) will build on existing relationships with UChicago Medicine (UCM) and Lurie Children’s Hospital to expand and increase relationships with medical care providers who assist low-income families of color with children. The project will educate staff of Health care providers about homebased health hazards and the resources and referrals available to mitigate the hazards. The program will work directly with families to assist them in abating health hazards. The project will work to develop long-term policy solutions such as just cause eviction and proactive rental inspections. The project will ensure that community members are participating in making recommendations and creating policies that will lift up the entire community. In particular, the project will look at developing early intervention models aimed at prevention.
