    Capoeira Chicago

    Capoeira Chicago is thrilled to propose hosting a captivating 3-day event over the Labor Day weekend, specifically on September 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Our event promises an immersive experience, encompassing workshops that delve into the rich history, music, and movements of the martial art of capoeira and the cultural dance Maculele. During these enlightening sessions, participants will gain insights into the indomitable spirit and courage of African people who endured the harrowing experience of slavery in Brazil. Moreover, they will learn how these art forms serve as powerful vehicles to understand the struggle for equality, social justice, and freedom among Africans and their descendants. The workshops are scheduled to take place at the esteemed Red Clay Dance Company's location, situated at 808 East 63rd St., Chicago IL 60637, from 11 AM to 3 PM on September 2nd and 3rd. In addition to the two-day workshops, on September 4th, Capoeira Chicago is excited to host a special field trip to The African Festival of the Arts. This festival is a vibrant celebration of diverse black global cultures, and one of the highlights will be the performance of the inspiring black empowerment movement band from Brazil, ILE AYE. To ensure that all participants, both youth and adults, can fully engage in this enriching experience, we are pleased to provide transportation to and from the workshops and the field trip. We cordially invite everyone to join us in this journey of cultural exploration, celebrating our shared ancestry and heritage through the mesmerizing world of capoeira and Maculele. We will make all efforts to provide participants a safe and unforgettable Labor Day weekend event that promises to leave lasting impressions and cherished memories.     Real Men Charities, Inc.

    Real Men Charities, Inc. is proud to offer youth and teens an alternative to "hanging out in the streets" right after school ends for the summer. Camp in the Key of Life: Fun Artful Days for Future Physicians, Artists, Gardeners Camp for South Shore Champs is an interactive play, learn, and sustain opportunity for youth to develop nutrition awareness to ward off obesity, temperance/understanding through participating in peace circles, participate in art and creative learning experiences, and critical coping skills to support mental health and wellness. RMC is partnering with Hood Hope Movement, Central South Shore Area Council, and the Chicago Police Department 4th District CAPS program to recruit students and share experts in the field for presentations and workshops four times between August 5th – 26th and one all-day youth experience during Labor Day weekend.

    The Garden of Love

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $5,000

    The Garden of Love has two community gardens that are open and accessible to the community. We host book clubs, garden days, movie nights and more events and activities throughout the year. During the course of the year the Garden of Love works with a number of families and individuals looking for ways to come together in a safe environment and we love to provide that for them. Over the August 6th-21st period the Garden of Love will work with 25 youth ranging from ages 5-18. As we begin wind down our summer activities we will be taking our young people on field trips in and around the Chicago land area to provide exposure and education allowing our participants the opportunity to learn not just about their community but also the surrounding areas. We will be hosting RJ conversations and hosting an End of Summer Celebration to bring young people and their families together to celebrate the last day of summer vacation.

    OPEN Center for the Arts

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $5,000

    The Art of Competing Program– the children/youth will explore the history of the pinewood derby cars, the components, how to make, design, paint a derby car and, how to compete. Everyone will have an opportunity to create and race their derby car with a set of rules and limited tools to level out the playing field. Funds will be used, for the coordination, supplies, teaching artists, community engagement, documentation, and admin of this course. The program will run between August 6 – September 2 at OPEN Center for the Arts by the OPEN Team.

    Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $5,000

    Our organization will treat the youth and adults attending to visit different parts of Chicago to gain a larger view of the city they live in. We will take a boat trip to see architecture along the Chicago river. We will visit Millenium Park and the Cultural Center downtown. We will take participants to the north side to see neighborhoods they are unfamiliar with. We will visit Chinatown and do some shopping there. We will take attendees to Dusable Museum and learn more about African American History.

    Harmony Community Cares NFP

    Awarded: Awarded Amount: $3,500

    Harmony Community Cares is proposing to organize a Community Peace Barbecue for Labor Day Weekend which will serve as an opportunity for the families of our community to come together and celebrate. This event will take place on Saturday, September 2nd between 12pm and 4pm in the Harmony Community Church Peace Garden, and will feature food, entertainment, and a basketball tournament with a cash prize for the winner. In addition, we will hold a Pre-event Weeding Party, where we have our community come together to maintain our Peace Garden ahead of the barbecue. Funds will be used to pay for food stalls, rental games, performers, and a basketball rim, as well as the materials needed for the Pre-event Weeding Party, including gloves, herbicide, and tools. Harmony Community Cares has experience putting on community events which bring our community together and offer a chance to have fun while keeping our children safe. Already, we are planning to have another community event, the Back to School Bash, on August 2nd, which will provide another opportunity to market for our Labor Day event.
