Latinos have a long history of giving, and in 2003 leaders of the Latino community in Chicago came together with the Trust to create Nuestro Futuro – “Our Future.”
This initiative will enable the Latino community to pool resources for greater impact in addressing problems of common concern – a quality education for our children, affordable housing, adequate healthcare, job training, immigrant integration and cultural programs.
With Nuestro Futuro, we have two goals:
- To involve more Latinos in philanthropy.
- To support the organizations and programs improving the quality of life of Latinos in metropolitan Chicago.
Nuestro Futuro provides three ways for donors to participate:
- The Latino Heritage Endowment Fund – Donors pool their resources and Latino civic and business leaders advise grants made from the fund.
- The Latino Giving Circle – Individuals pool their resources to support Latino not-for-profit organizations and form a social network of people with similar interests and values as they learn about philanthropy as a vehicle for social change.
- Individual Funds – Families, groups and individuals establish individual funds and other tax efficient charitable giving vehicles.
Nuestro Futuro announced its first series of grants this year, totaling nearly $200,000 and benefiting 10 organizations.
