The African American Legacy Initiative

Vision
Our vision is to become a significant participant in making positive change to the quality of life in the African American community and in increasing the number of African Americans participating in collective giving.

Mission
Our mission is to improve the quality of life in the African American community. With a permanent endowment as our foundation, we will use the power of collective giving and the philosophy of community engagement to make a significant impact on organizations that focus on community based services.

Core Values
In fulfilling our mission and vision, we value

  • Longevity: Our responsibility is to build a permanent endowment to insure a lasting, sustainable legacy
  • Partnership: We value the contributions and input of organizations who are similarly dedicated to improving the community and involve them in our community impact strategy
  • Leadership: We recognize the importance of our role to provide leadership in identifying and galvanizing support for vital issues that affect the quality of life in the African American community
  • Diversity: Our strength comes from involving the diverse African American community in all aspects of our strategy and its implementation
  • Strength In Community: Bringing together donors to make a larger, more impactful contribution

In 2007, The African American Legacy Initiative of The Chicago Community Trust awarded its third round of grants to 11 local agencies.
