Building Arts Access for All Children

United by a deep belief in arts learning as essential to children’s academic and personal growth, Trust grant makers and their colleagues from other philanthropies created a collaborative fund to strengthen the arts as part of the core curriculum in Chicago Public Schools. The collaborative successfully advocated with Chicago Public Schools to develop an office of arts education to function parallel to the offices dedicated to the other core curriculum areas. It is currently spearheading the Chicago Arts Learning Initiative (CALI), which is a community-organizing effort to engage a broader coalition of stakeholders to align external and internal arts education around the newly-created Chicago Guide for Teaching and Learning in the Arts.

Arts Education in the Chicago Public Schools

In 2001, the average Chicago elementary school student received less than one hour of arts education a week. This fact, and other findings from the Trust's survey of Chicago Public Schools, helped inspire the Arts Education Initiative, now known as the Chicago Arts Education Collaborative.
