Centro San Bonifacio

A 2011 grant from Nuestro Futuro has helped to expand the Comadres Health Promoters program, providing support services and education for low-income, Spanish-speaking mothers.

Roberto wasn't speaking very well. That's what worried his mother two years ago, when she approached the staff at Centro San Bonifacio for help.

Health promoters at the Centro reassured Roberto’s mother that children can develop language skills at different rates and still be healthy. Maria Chavez, a health promoter who worked closely with Roberto, used techniques like sound recognition and paraphrasing to assess his language functions. Happily, she reported that his skills were developing normally for his age.

Two years later, Roberto is a healthy 4-year-old who speaks easily with his family and friends. His mother has been pleased with the services Centro San Bonifacio offers families in the West Town and East Village community. She has recommended their care to six expectant mothers in the neighborhood, and today, three of those mothers are turning to the Centro for care a second time around.
