History:
Founded in 1974 by tennis legend Billie Jean King, the Womens Sports Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable educational organization dedicated to advancing the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity. The Womens Sports Foundation works for equal opportunity for our daughters to play sports so that they too can derive the psychological, physiological and sociological benefits of sports participation. Research has proven that girls and women who are physically active, regardless of their level or ability, have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem and lower levels of depression. The Foundation engineers social change through strategic participation grants, education, advocacy, research and leadership programs, and collaborating with other foundations and non-profit organizations to deliver programs for economically disadvantaged populations and avoid duplication of services. The Womens Sports Foundation collaborates with more than 300 national and regional organizations, ranging from the American Association of University Women and the Womens National Basketball Association to Girl Scouts of America and Boys and Girls Clubs. Each relationship is critical to the success of the Foundations programming efforts.
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Womens Sports Foundation is to advance the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity.
Current Program:
The Womens Sports Foundation annually supports the efforts of 1,200 national and local girl-serving organizations in urban, rural and suburban communities throughout the United States. The Foundation is dedicated to ensuring equal access for girls and women in sports and fitness through programs in participation, education, advocacy, research and leadership. The Foundations flagship program, GoGirlGo!, launched in 2001, is a national initiative to get girls ages 8 18 physically active. GoGirlGo! was developed to give girls the opportunity to be physically active, which in turn boosts their self-esteem and builds character, and helps them understand that sedentary lifestyles often have dire consequences. GoGirlGo! maintains community offices in Atlanta, Chicago, San Antonio, and Boston.
