History:
ShawChicago is a theater company established in 1994 by the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs to perform the works of George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries. While Andrew Callis served as the founding Artistic Director, Robert Scogin assumed the position in 1996. The company became an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the summer of 2000. In January 2003, ShawChicago took a major step forward by becoming the Theater in Residence of the Ruth Page Center for the Arts. The company remains the only performing arts organization in the United States dedicated to the work of Shaw. - - It is the mission of ShawChicago to provide audiences in the Chicago metropolitan area with the opportunity to experience the plays of George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) and his contemporaries by exploring -- through performances and concert readings -- the stylistic nuances, contemporary relevance, brilliant dialogue, and wit and wisdom of the plays. The company develops an ensemble of actors who possess the vocal technique necessary to bring Shaws intricate dialogue to life. -

Current Program:
ShawChicago will presentthree concert reading productions (12 performances each)at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts and the Chicago Cultural Center. In December 2008 a special holiday production (4 performances) looking at the immigrant experience during holiday season through the eyes of Shaw contemporaries. In addition, the company supports an Outreach Program of performances in both public and private venues -- contracted by Chicago metropolitan area colleges, libraries, public schools, community organizations, senior citizen centers and private individuals. ShawChicago has negotiated special staged reading contract with Actors Equity Association. The 2008-2009 season has the theme of Politics. The season will include "The Apple Cart" by Bernard Shaw will be presented in November at the Ruth Page Theater. "John Bull's Other Island" by Shaw will run in February 2009 at the Ruth Page Theater. The season will close with "Waste" by Harley Granville Barker which runs from April 2009 at the Chicago Cultural Center. Ticket prices will remain $15.00 per person as part of a subcription. Individual tickets will cost $20.
