History:
We accomplish this through three primary programs: Real Estate Development, Youth Education and Technology Training, and Community Organizing. LCDC stands out as a capable force for community development. Credits include over $60 million in residential and commercial redevelopment. Our first new construction project, Canaan Homes, created affordable single-family homes for families earning as little as $32,000 and we are currently in the process of developing 100 additional affordable rental units. LCDCs work has garnered many awards including being the first winner of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation's Non-Profit Community Builder of the Year award in 2001 and the 2008 CNDA Community Strategy of the Year Award. We developed the $3.4 million Jubilee Family Resource Center through a partnership with the Carole Robertson Center for Learning and the Illinois Facilities Fund, providing subsidized care to 217 children and creating 50 new jobs. This facility won a Richard R. Driehaus Excellence in Community Design Award. By organizing Lawndale residents through block clubs, churches, school organizations, and other neighborhood institutions, LCDC has accomplished major infrastructure and safety improvements. In 1996 we worked with the City of Chicago through a Strategic Neighborhood Action Plan that brought more than $9 million in infrastructure and public school improvements. We served as the lead organizer on the west side for United Powers affordable housing initiative, Ezra Community Homes that has produced 100 new construction homes in Lawndale that are affordable to households earning as little as $25,000. In 2003, LCDC was selected as the lead agency in North Lawndale for LISCs New Communities Program and has successfully mobilized more than 30 organizations and 300 residents around the development and implementation of a five-year Quality of Life Plan for North Lawndale. LCDC has been instrumental in meeting another critical need for youth and adults through its 31-computer state-of-the-art community technology center. Through September of 2005, LCDCs education programs prepared more than 300 youth each year for academic excellence and the challenges of college. Our focus now for education is to 1. offer youth apprenticeship programs in partnership with After School Matters that will produce public art projects throughout North Lawndale and provide job readiness skills through web design, graphics arts and video production classes. 2. provide basic computer training, IC3 and A+ certification classes for youth and adults. In addition job training classes and computer access are provided for both youth and adults.
Mission Statement:
Lawndale Christian Development Corporation's (LCDC) mission is to bring holistic revitalization to the lives and environments of Lawndale residents through economic empowerment, housing improvements, educational enrichments and community advocacy.
Current Program:
Real Estate Development: LCDC focuses on both residential and commercial development projects. Credits include over $60 million in redevelopment during the last 12 years. Our current affordable housing projects will result in an additional $29 million in redevelopment in North Lawndale during the next 2-3 years. Youth Education: Lawndale Legacies Community Technology Center is a state-of-the-art 31-computer facility where K-12th grade students and adults increase their computer literacy and academic and professional competitiveness. We also seek to be a partner for educational excellence through New Communities Program (NCP) initiatives such as sponsoring two youth apprenticeship program in partnership with After School Matters that will produce public art projects throughout North Lawndale and provide job readiness skills through web design, graphics arts and video production classes. In addition job training classes and computer access are provided for both youth and adults. Community Organizing: By organizing Lawndale residents through block clubs, churches, school organizations, and other neighborhood institutions, LCDC has accomplished major infrastructure and safety improvements in Lawndale. Recognizing the need to connect to a broader power structure, LCDC became a founding member of United Power for Action and Justice in 1997. United Power is a coalition of more than 300 churches, mosques, synagogues, labor unions, hospitals, business and civic groups from across the Chicago region. LCDC functions as the lead organizer on the West side in United Powers affordable housing initiative, Ezra Community Homes, which has produced 100 affordable new construction homes in Lawndale. LCDC was selected in 2003 to serve as the lead agency in Lawndale for the Local Initiatives Support Corporations (LISC) New Communities Program (NCP). LCDC is organizing local residents around the implementation of a five-year Quality of Life Plan. The goal of the plan is to create comprehensive, sustainable change in North Lawndale.
