The company also partnered with the Mayors Office of Special Events for two years to produce the annual Haunted L. Notable collaborations and festivals include: Steppenwolf Theaters Visiting Company Initiative, Museum of Contemporary Arts, PAC/Edge Festival, New York Fringe Festival, Theater on the Lake and The Hypocrites are serving as a hub theater for the national theater festival 365 Plays/365 Days.
Mission Statement:
The companys mission is to make Theater of Honesty. The Hypocrites define Theater of Honesty chiefly through two elements of our work: performance and presentation. In performance, our actors shall employ a genuine emotional vulnerability, rather than manufacturing a disconnected, intellectual version of emotion. In presentation, The Hypocrites shall acknowledge our presence in a theater and embrace high theatricality. Through this balance of an unyielding emotional honesty and accepting a concept of "play," they seek to strengthen the connection between artist and audience, enriching our audience's imaginative experience. Ultimately, The Hypocrites aim to spread understanding within society, thereby minimizing cruelty.
Current Program:
The Hypocrites programming includes producing three mainstage productions and generally participation in one festival piece each season. Seasons run from September to June. Shows are budgeted between $20,000 and $30,000 each. The current and next seasons are housed at the Chopin Theater, located at 1543 W. Division. It is a flexible space that can seat up to 100 patrons. Shows will run between 7 to 8 weeks, Thursdays through Sunday. The 2007-08 season is as follows: Eugene ONeill's Desire Under the Elms (September 17 to November 11, 2007) directed by Hypocrites company member Geoff Button; August Strinberg's Miss Julie (January 7 to March 2, 2008) directed by Artistic director Sean Graney and Thorton Wilder's Our Town (April 24 to June 8, 2008) directed by invited guest director David Cromer.
