History:
Its model for living out its mission is: 1. Functions of the organization: Direct Service, Advocacy and Community Organizing; 2. Geographical Basis: The far Northside and the North Shore of Chicago; 3. Membership: Members are institutions from the Chicagos North Shore and the Chicago neighborhood of Rogers Park. The Board of Directors is comprised of leaders from partner institutions and individuals committed to the organizations mission; 4. Funding Base: Partner institutions provide virtually all the food served by the Good News Community Kitchen. Financial support comes from partner institutions, individuals and foundations committed to ending poverty and to supporting community organizing as well as corporations and other organizations.
Mission Statement:
A Just Harvest is an anti-hunger organization committed to service, collaboration and advocacy. It has been responding to hunger since 1983. The mission of A Just Harvest is to reduce poverty and hunger in the Rogers Park and greater Chicago community by providing nutritious meals daily while building a just society through advocacy and collaborative relationships across racial, cultural and socio-economic lines to promote the well-being of patrons served.
Current Program:
In order to carryout its mission, A Just Harvest currently runs the following three programs: 1.The Community Kitchen helps fight hunger by a. providing hot nutritious meals 365 days a year to all seeking and needing food; b.hosting and staffing the Greater Chicago Food Depository's Producemobile, which provides fresh produce to over 150 families once a month; c.distributing non-perishable items approximately twice a month; and d.offering donated baked goods daily. 2. The Advocacy, Outreach, and Organizing Program currently a. works to strengthen supporting relationships with community agencies and partnering organizations; b. provide additional support services to patrons of the Community Kitchen; and, c. through Northside P.O.W.E.R. (People Organized to Work, Educate and Restore: i.offers organizing training and leadership development; and, ii. mobilizes the constituent base of A Just Harvest to affect change in social and economic conditions that perpetuate poverty and hunger in the community. 3.Through the Childrens Anti-Hunger Collaborative, A Just Harvest will continue to meet the nutritional needs of children by: a. enhancing the food and nutrition component of both the Howard Area Community Centers (HACC) Greensleeves After-School Project and the Good News Reading Program; b. providing staff support in order to host the Summer Nutrition Program; and c. operating a free hot lunch program for school age children during the schools major winter and spring breaks.
