Mission Statement:
DanceWorks Chicago is an organization committed to building a foundation for the individual artistic growth of dancers and choreographers, providing a laboratory from which early career artists propel themselves and the art form to a new level through training, collaboration, mentorship, and performance. Led with integrity by the recognized team of Andreas B?ttcher (CEO) and Julie Nakagawa (Artistic Director), DanceWorks Chicago (DWC) fills a niche in the dance ecosystem. Where the traditional dance company model focuses on putting dances on stage, DWC invests in and shines a spotlight on the individual artists. With six hand-picked dancers working together over the course of a 30-week annual contract, DWC is proud to share excellence in dance through a diverse repertory featuring who is new and what is next in contemporary dance as well as showcasing exciting work from established choreographers.

Current Program:
DWC continues to demonstrate its commitment to illuminating and giving context to the artistic journey through a menu of on-going offerings including open auditions and company classes, monthly Dance Chance events encouraging, sharing, and discussing new work by area choreographers; free, informal Dance Bytes illuminating the creative process; and Dance Flight, our fresh approach to performance. Season highlights include an invitation from Mikhail Baryshnikov to perform at the Baryshnikov Arts Center (NYC) and recognition by the Chicago Tribune as one of the Best of 2009 for our collaboration with the Harris Theater on the new Eat to the Beat lunchtime series. DWC aspires to be a catalyst within the cultural community, encouraging different ways of thinking, innovative collaborations, mentorship, and the development of more textured audience engagement where the energy flows both ways between artist and audience in real and virtual time.
